![]() It really starts with the Cynics."īonus: "Someone took into a magnificent house and warned him not to expectorate, whereupon having cleared his throat he discharged the phlegm into the man's face, being unable, he said, to find a meaner receptacle." You don't see that in Socrates, Plato or Aristotle. "It's the first time in the history of Western philosophy that you get this really radical conception of freedom. "Diogenes makes it clear that he's the master in that relationship, not the person who bought him, just like he's more free than Alexander the Great," says Piering. Even as a slave, Diogenes was freer than his supposed master. He spotted a rich man in the crowd named Xeniades and said, "Sell me to this man he needs a master."Īgain, Diogenes used a witty exchange to say something about the nature of freedom. When the auctioneer asked Diogenes "in what he was proficient," according to Diogenes Laertius, the mischievous philosopher replied, "In ruling men." Kind of an odd thing for a slave to say, but Diogenes persisted. According to Diogenes Laertius, the mighty Alexander is reported to have said, "Had I not been Alexander, I should have liked to be Diogenes."īonus: "When someone was extolling the good fortune of Callisthenes and saying what splendour he shared in the suite of Alexander, 'Not so,' said Diogenes, 'but rather ill fortune for he breakfasts and dines when Alexander thinks fit.'" You might think that insulting an emperor would get you in trouble, but Diogenes enjoyed a strange type of immunity as a "comic" figure and even posh Athenians had a grudging respect for Diogenes' unencumbered freedom. "So not only does Diogenes not need anything from Alexander the Great, he doesn't want anything from him." "When you're indebted to a politician, a statesman, or even more so the emperor, you have lost your ability to speak freely and act freely," says Piering. And Diogenes knew that a "boon" from Alexander wasn't just a gift, but an attempt to buy his loyalty. But what we do know is that Cynics like Diogenes prized one thing above all else: autarkeia, a Greek word that roughly translates into autonomy or freedom. Here are five of the most memorable moments from the life of Diogenes of Sinope:ĭid Diogenes dislike Alexander? We don't know. For our purposes, we're going to quote directly from "Lives of Eminent Philosophers" even if the quotes or anecdotes about Diogenes are written in the third person. If you search the internet for Diogenes quotes, by the way, you'll find a lot of lines that were lifted from Diogenes Laertius and reworded as first-person quotes from Diogenes. ![]() In " Lives of Eminent Philosophers," the Greek historian Diogenes Laertius recorded the greatest comedic hits of Diogenes, including some truly sick burns directed at figures like Alexander the Great and Plato. Everything else was nonsense.ĭiogenes left no writing of his own and just about everything we know about him was written centuries later by another guy named Diogenes. Human nature and reason, to Cynics, were the only requirements for a happy life. But the Cynics lived this way to make a point - that there is nothing shameful about being human. They dressed in rough blankets, slept under porticos, and did every "shameful" human act in public. It's Diogenes who took the radicalized version of that."ĭiogenes and his Cynic followers were beggars. ![]() "He just said not to care about money or status or power more than you care about the state of your soul. It's the combat which is the greatest disappointment. ![]() Stat-fans can switch on floating damage scores. Generally they'll be mobbing you in numbers, with occasional mixed ranged and melee groups needing a bit more crowd-management nous. Each themed area of the large world map features a particular breed of beastie, usually in two different flavours. Pretty and inventive, these brightly coloured fiends clash gaily with the patchwork foliage and ramshackle architecture to create a pleasantly disharmonious melange. Monster design is a similarly fresh take on old favourites, with chunky, papercraft skeletons and lumpen plasticine demons. Short animated sequences punctuate important story points too - their bright, angular puppetry marred only by their brevity. Most of the staple fantasy environments are here, from castles to swamps to fiery mines, but generally presented with enough of an acerbic edge to lend them individuality. Part colourful cardboard cutout, part Ren and Stimpy nightmare, DeathSpank's Bosch-fairytale scenery scrolls over the horizon in a most pleasing manner. Where DeathSpank does diverge from tradition, and very successfully at that, is in its art style. Such is the case with DeathSpank, which takes the pomp and earnestness of the Western RPG as its rather easy target, throws in a few words like 'thunderstomp', items such as 'chicken-lips' and the odd sabre-toothed donkey - then slips instantly back into repetitive fetch-quests and button bashing combat, losing any satirical edge by aping its subject too closely. If whatever you're sending up isn't observed extremely acutely, and your mockery doesn't differ significantly enough from the lampooned material, then the result is often just as hackneyed and predictable as what you're trying to parody. It's partly the difficult balance of pastiche. (Although bear in mind that I'm also the sort of grumpy misanthrope who only laughed twice during Hot Tub Time Machine.) That's not to say it isn't amusing - I found a few chuckles during the expansive script that accompanies the 15 or so hours of the busy quest-log - but I can't help feel I'm not really part of DeathSpank's target audience. Conversely, DeathSpank revels in the smuttiness of its approach, and it's this which seems likely to divide its potential audience. ![]() Monkey Island was irreverent, and often less than conceptual in its humour, but it never really resorted to full-on toilet antics. This however in no way changes how I feel. Perhaps the abstract nature of the images do not particularly appeal to me, or perhaps the astrological elements confuse rather than clarify matters for me. I keep it mostly for sentimental and collector’s reasons. The cards are very colorful, and each is striking in its own way.Īs for myself, despite my fondness for the deck, I seldom use it. I would however highly recommend it to art lovers and the more adventurous Tarot user. Together with the fact that the card titles have changed, such potential confusion makes the deck unsuitable for beginners. ![]() This, while intended to clarify, could lead to confusion. One of the drawbacks of this deck could be the many interpretive elements on each card. Nevertheless, the cards are beautifully illustrated: devotees of abstract art are most likely to find the images appealing. I would therefore not recommend it for very young Tarot users or for the “sensitive” viewer who is easily upset by graphic nudity. In general, the artwork of these cards is very abstract, but also in some cases very graphic, especially the Lovers (or Choice, as Ms. This suggests a family rather than the royal relationship of the traditional Tarot. The Court cards are renamed to Daughter (page), Son (knight), Mother (Queen), and Father (King) of each suite. At the top of the card is a word suggesting the meaning of the particular card, while an associated god or goddess name appears at the bottom. Each card features astrological and mythical Egyptian symbols in the right and left margins. The Minor Arcana are equally interesting. Smith has replaced some archaic terms with more modern ones. These “new” names appear to be more in connection with the modern world and current values, although this is a matter of opinion. 1 is called the Trickster, Card 5 is the Pope instead of High Priest, and Card 21 Aeon instead of the World. ![]() Instead of the Magician, for example, Card no. Some of these are quite cryptic, and a creative mind would most thrive on deciphering them.Īnother interesting thing about the Major Arcana is the fact that, while some retain their traditional titles, such as The Sun, The Star and The Fool, others have been renamed to more clearly, according to their creator, suggest their meaning. On the sides, there are two lines in fairly poetic language, which also relate to the meaning of each card. For the Major Arcana, the name and number of each card appears at the top, with an associated key word at the bottom. Smith for example includes symbolic references as reminders of each card’s meaning. The deck itself is unusual in several ways. The cards are also color coded according to each element. The holistic Element for the Major Arcana is represented by an oval, Water by a half moon turned on its side to take the form of a cup or bowl, Earth by a square, Air by a circle and Fire by a triangle. The symbols for the elements are at the very bottom of every card. For the Minor Arcana, the element earth refers to pentacles, air to swords, fire to wands, and water to cups. The Elemental Tarot is so named for its use of the four elements, earth, air, fire, water, and then the fifth, holistic Universe element represented by the Major Arcana. I therefore have a particularly emotional connection with the Elemental Tarot, which goes beyond my fondness for image or meaning. The aunt and I are both mystically-minded individuals, and she knew I would love to learn about the Tarot. A favorite aunt gave me the cards as a gift, and set me on a path of mystery, magic and joy that I hope to continue throughout the rest of my life. I am particularly fond of this deck, because it was the first I ever received. |
